cherryが桜の意です。
ちなみにチェリーを日本語では、「さくらんぼ」と言い、
『さくらんぼ』と『さくら』の違いを調べた所、
観賞用の桜にも赤い実をつけるものがあるが、これは一般には食用とはされない。俗に「サクランボ」と呼ばれ、果実を食用とするものは、西洋系の品種であるセイヨウミザクラ（西洋実桜）で、これはしばしば「桜桃」（おうとう）とも呼ばれるが、本来は、「桜桃」とはセイヨウミザクラとは別種のシナミザクラ（中国実桜、支那実桜）を指す。
